Patriots Win @ 1/3
Winning Margin 7-12 @ 5/1
Tonight’s NFL game is a big matchup between this season’s surprise package the Houston Texans and NFL powerhouse the New England Patriots, who surprisingly have very little history between them.
The Texans and Patriots have met just three times before, including a 40-7 New England rout at Foxboro in 2006. Since then the Texans have made giant strides and they are a far different Houston team, eager to prove it belongs among the NFL’s elite.
A Houston win tonight would all but tie up the top spot in the AFC for the Texans, however, a loss enables New England to close the gap for the AFC’s best record and would also give Bill Belichick’s side the all-important tiebreaker.
The Pats currently lead the NFL in both points per game as well as yards per game. But having lost the imposing Rob Gronkowski with a broken arm earlier in the season, they have been dealt another significant blow to their offense; losing Julian Edelman for the season to a foot injury.
Edelman is not nearly as important to the passing game as Welker, Aaron Hernandez or even a Brandon Lloyd, but he did provide the kind of depth which is tough to match up with for opposing defenses when the Pats stretch the field.
Of course Houston also has its injury issues and has been without defensive leader Brain Cushing for much of the season. The ailing unit will try to stop Brady despite missing cornerback Brice McCain (foot injury) and linebacker Brooks Reed (groin injury), who remain out. Meanwhile, all-pro corner Johnathan Joseph and linebacker Bradie James are both probable but dealing with hamstring issues.
Since the Patriots typically surge in December and are 10-1 in their last 11 Monday night contests, give New England a slight edge.
