Super Bowl Preview
Super Bowl XLVII will go down in history as the first in which two brothers take each other on as head coaches, leading to it being renamed in the media as the ‘Har-Bowl’ or ‘Super-Baugh.
It also features two teams that have won all the Super Bowls in which they have appeared, making it even more of a must see spectacle than usual.
It really does have everything, a rookie quarterback who has been thrust into the limelight by capitalizing on the injury to Alex Smith, one of the most reliable Quarter Backs in the league and a veteran line-backer and future hall of famer; who had earlier this season announced his intention to retire at whatever point the Ravens season ends.
Colin Kaepernick is living a lifelong dream, because when he was in the 4th grade he wrote himself a letter. He predicted that he would be 6 feet 4 inches and would “then go to the pros and play in the Niners or Packers even if they aren’t good in seven years”.
Where one career begins another is winding down. Following the announcement of his intent to retire, Ray Lewis has been monumental in the Ravens march to the Super Bowl, leaving experienced quarterback’s and opposition coaches in tears in a relentless mission to end his career on the back of a Super Bowl win.
Both of these players will no doubt have a lot to say in the outcome of this exciting match up and will be featured heavily in the build-up and during the game.
Super Bowls are often won or lost on turnovers and the Niners have forced a turnover in 16 of 18 games thus far. But although Baltimore’s defence isn’t considered as good as it once was, they force turnovers at the same rate as San Francisco and should be able to defend Crabtree effectively.
The 49ers will run the ball more effectively than the Ravens, however the Ravens are capable of making two or three big plays in the passing game to keep it close.
This game has all the makings of a classic Super Bowl and there will be a lot of pressure on the shoulders of Kaepernick; so much so that the final result could depend on how he performs under the weight of it. Although the 49ers have enough to win, and I really hope they do, I can see the Ravens stealing the win with a narrow margin 28-24.
